  • First half of the tour Itinerary – Munich return: 19 – 28 December 2018

    Day 1: Wednesdsay, 19 December
    Your tour commences this evening at your hotel. Shopping is always excellent in Munich – particularly around the town hall and the decorated, wooden, Christmas market stalls. Before your Bavarian style buffet dinner enjoy a welcome drink in the hotel.

    Day 2: Thursday, 20 December
    Mondsee and Salzburg sightseeing
    This morning we cross into Austria to take a morning break in the pretty town of Mondsee, by Lake Mondsee. Make sure you visit the church made famous in the wedding scene of the film ‘The Sound of Music’. We then continue on to Salzburg – the baroque city of Mozart sitting beneath its enormous Festung (Fortress). We have arranged an afternoon walking city tour with an expert local guide who will introduce you to this enchanting city, including several locations used in the film ‘The Sound of Music’. Dinner tonight is included in your hotel.

    Day 3: Friday, 21 December
    ‘My Time’ in Salzburg and Christmas Market
    We have left this day entirely free for you to enjoy this marvellous city with its winding cobblestoned streets, churches, Christmas decorations and shops – all a short walk away. Take time to visit the huge castle for a fascinating view and don’t forget to soak up the atmosphere of the famous Salzburg Christmas Markets.

    Oberammergau in the snow

    Day 4: Saturday, 22 December
    ‘My Time in Innsbruck Christmas Markets and Oberammergau
    A leisurely day as we follow the spectacular Inn Valley across the Tyrol to reach the Winter Olympic resort of Innsbruck mid morning. You will have plenty of time to explore the old town with its famous ‘Golden Roof’ and Christmas Markets. In the afternoon we will drive over the incredibly scenic Garmisch- Partenkirchen Mountain pass into Bavaria to the historic village of Oberammergau and our Christmas hotel where we stay the next five nights. Famed for its ‘Passion Play’ performances which have been staged every 10 years since the 1600’s, Oberammergau is set in the picturesque Ammer Valley beneath snow capped mountains.

    The town itself is also famous for its beautifully painted houses and chalets. On arrival we will be greeted with a welcome drink. All dinners, including traditional Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas Day Turkey lunch are included over the next five nights.

    Day 5: Sunday, 23 December
    Neuschwanstein Castle, Wieskirche and ’My Time’ in Garmisch-Partenkirchen
    This morning we take you on a picturesque drive to the village of Hohenschwangau. After a brisk walk uphill you will enjoy a visit to one of the most inspiring and famous castles in the world – ‘Mad’ King Ludwig’s romantic Neuschwanstein Castle. At the Castle you will enjoy a guided tour inside the King’s apartments, staterooms, halls and throne room all reminiscent of a Wagner operatic saga. On our return journey we make a special stop at the richly decorated Wieskirche (Church in the Meadows) with its incredible painted ceilings. Later this afternoon we also visit Germany’s premiere ski resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The town is beautifully decorated and you will be able to enjoy some last chance shopping in the delightful Christmas markets.

    Day 6: Monday, 24 December
    Christmas Eve at the top of the world – the mighty Zugspitze!
    Driving back to nearby Garmisch-Partenkirchen we board a funicular train which takes us across snow laden fields to the base of the mighty Zugspitze. At this point the train enters the mountain and tunnels its way up to Zugspitzeplatt station at an altitude of 2,600 metres. Here you can be entertained by the alpine hustle and bustle and marvel at the acrobatic stunts of the freeskiers and snowboarders in Terrain Park Zugspitze. There is also the marvellous SonnAlpin Glacier Restaurant to enjoy a relaxing brunch.
    Later we will catch the cable car to the summit of the Zugspitze Mountain, Germany’s highest peak. At an altitude of nearly 3,000 metres the views are quite stupendous. Take in the unmatched 360° panorama with a view of more than 400 peaks in Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Germany, or enjoy lunch in the Gipfelalm rustic summit lodge. We then catch the Eibsee cable car all the way down to the lakeside where our coach meets us and takes us back to our Christmas hotel. The warm glow will continue as we enjoy a traditional Christmas Eve Dinner.

    Day 7: Tuesday, 25 December
    Christmas Day – ‘My Time’ in a Bavarian village and a horse drawn carriage ride
    Christmas Day as it should be – relaxing, eating, drinking and definitely no Indiana Jones repeats, washing up and unwelcome long-lost relatives! Highlight of the day will be your ride in a horse drawn carriage through the local countryside. Enjoy a Christmas Day Turkey lunch at your hotel. Your afternoon will be free in this delightful Alpine location. Perhaps go for a winter walk or take a cable car to the top of the ski fields.

    Day 8: Wednesdsay, 26 December
    Linderhof Palace, Kloster Ettal and the Oberammergau Passion Play Theatre
    Boxing Day! This morning we visit nearby Linderhof, an extravagant French Rococo Palace – yet another of King Ludwig’s amazing creations. Later we stop at Kloster Ettal. This monastery in a lovely shaded valley dates back over 700 years and is one of the finest examples of Rococo architecture in existence. This afternoon we return to Oberammergau where we have included a guided tour through the amazing Passion Play Theatre.

    Day 9: Thursday, 27 December
    Munich sightseeing and ‘My Time’
    After a leisurely start we return to Munich. On arrival we have included a panoramic city tour, which will orientate you with the main sights, such as the neo-gothic town hall, and the wonderful church known as the Frauenkirche. Your afternoon is at leisure to explore this cosmopolitan city. This evening we say goodbye to Munich and this half of the tour with an included farewell dinner in a local restaurant.

    Second half of the tour – Munich to Berlin: 28 Dec 2018 – 2 Jan 2019

    Day 10: Friday, 28 December
    We leave the Maritim Hotel in Munich at 11am, and transfer to Dresden where we will spend the next two nights. Dinner tonight is included in your hotel, but first, enjoy a welcome drink. This is an ideal opportunity to meet your fellow travellers as we continue onto the second half of the tour.

    Day 11: Saturday, 29 December
    Dresden sightseeing and ‘My Time’
    Rebuilt after the massive bombing raids of WWII, Dresden has once again bloomed into one of the most beautiful and elegant cities in Europe, reflecting the grandeur of this capital of the Electors of Saxony, who once ruled a powerful empire. On our morning walking tour you will see the glorious Zwinger Palace courtyard, the Semper Opera House, and symbolic Frauenkirche dominating the massive market square. After following the Fürstenzug – a dramatic, 100 metre long painted porcelain mural depicting the procession of Princes, we visit the Dresden Royal palace. We have included entrance to the museums including the Armoury, Turkish Chamber, Riesensaal (Giants’ Hall) and the fabulous New Green Vault with over 1,000 beautiful and often priceless gold and silver bejewelled objects. Simply stunning!
    The rest of your day is at leisure. Make sure you take time to wander along Brühl’s Terrace by the river, which is nicknamed ‘the balcony of Europe’. This evening we will enjoy dinner in a local Saxon restaurant.

    Day 12: Sunday, 30 December
    Berlin sightseeing and ‘My Time’
    Arriving into Berlin late morning, we enjoy a brief panoramic orientation tour of this rejuvenated city. Your afternoon and evening are at leisure, and there is so much to do. Perhaps shop in the wide range of shops located immediately around your hotel, and nearby on fashionable Unter den Linden Strasse, or visit one of the many museums nearby your hotel. In Berlin you are spoilt for choice, a highlight being the UNESCO Heritage listed Museuminsel (Museum Island) with its 5 world class museums; the riveting Checkpoint Charlie museum and moving Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

    Day 13: Monday, 31 December
    Berlin sightseeing and ‘My Time’ exploring the Christmas Markets
    This morning we are joined by an expert local guide who will breathe life into this remarkable city. We will see all the major sights from the Brandenburg Gate and re-built Reichstag to Checkpoint Charlie, sections of ‘The Wall’, Potsdamer Platz, and the beautiful cathedrals of Gendarmenmarkt square. This afternoon, explore further at your own pace. Today is the last afternoon and evening of the WeihnachtsZauber Christmas market located at the Gendarmenmarkt, a few blocks from your hotel. This big ‘late’ market is gorgeously located in the square between the French and German cathedrals and the Berlin Concert Hall. A night of celebration with a buffet dinner and entertainment in your hotel. As midnight approaches, you might choose to stroll along Unter den Linden Strasse and join the revellers around the Brandenburg Gate to witness the fireworks display.

    Day 14: Tuesday, 1 January
    Potsdam sightseeing – Cecilienhof Palace, Sanssouci Palace gardens & the ‘Bridge of Spies’
    A leisurely start this morning for our excursion to nearby Potsdam. On arrival we enjoy a guided visit to Cecilienhof Palace. This was the last palace built by the German Kaisers, and is most famous for being the site of the Potsdam Convention where Churchill, Truman and Stalin met in 1945. Inside is a fascinating museum and the furniture, private reception rooms and huge conference table, remain exactly as they were when these great leaders met to carve up a ravaged, post war world. Afterwards, accompanied by our local guide, we will enjoy a panoramic tour including a stop on the terraces of Fredrick the Great’s Sanssouci Summer Palace, before enjoying lunchtime in Potsdam’s pretty centre. On our way back to Berlin this afternoon we stop to take a walk on the Bridge of Unity – more famously known as the ‘Bridge of Spies’. This evening we have included a farewell dinner.
