Feel the Breeze On Your Skin with a Sailing Holiday

Sailing has long since been a favourite activity for young and old alike, and is a unique way in which to see the sights of an area. Whether cruising around the stunning islands and beaches of the Whitsundays, or taking a Mediterranean getaway to historic coastal cities such as Dubrovnik, sailing holidays provide a unique way in which to experience the culture and the beauty of the area. You can stop off at uninhabited islands along the way, explore quaint fishing villages, cruise by historic ruins or sail to majestic waterside towns – all at your own pace and creative itinerary.

Both Sunsail and the Moorings offer great sailing holidays all around the globe aboard monohulls and catamarans. Yachts can generally fit between 2-12 people and can range from 32-62 feet. If you’re a keen sailor and prefer the traditional experience, you’re likely to go for a monohull. But if you’re passionate about the social experience of cruising, catamarans provide greater stability in the water and have greater indoor space – so they may be just the yacht for you.

Don’t have sailing experience?

If you don’t feel you have the adequate experience required, you can always choose to have a skipper on board who will take care of all the work for you. Hiring a skipper or sail guide is ideal for sailors who may not have enough confidence or sailing hours to take the helm and also for those who like to have plenty of time for swimming, snorkelling and simply chilling out with a book or a glass in hand. You’ll also be able to take advantage of your skipper’s insider knowledge of all the best restaurants, places to visit and sheltered anchorages.

Or if you would like that added sense of peace, you could go on a flotilla. A Flotilla is the ultimate in social sailing and the perfect balance between independence and unobtrusive support. In a group of up to 14 other yachts and headed up by a lead boat, you will sail from destination to destination, safe in the knowledge that help is close at hand, should you need it. And don’t forget, every evening you can join other sailors on your Flotilla and participate in evening meals, beach BBQ’s and Punch parties! Sunsail offer flotilla options in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and the Whitsundays.

Or if you would like all the work taken care of for you, then a Moorings Luxury Private Crewed Charter would be perfect for you. With your professional skipper at the helm, you sail to all the best places at a given destination, where you can swim, snorkel, scuba dive, or simply relax amid your exotic surroundings. Meanwhile your personal chef prepares meals based on your preferences – and with flair unique to your location. Friendly, discreet, and courteous, your professional crew is there to ensure that you enjoy yourself to the fullest. You also have the option of a Sail Away Stateroom in the Caribbean – when an entire yacht is more than you require, these holidays allow you to indulge in the luxury of a fully-crewed yacht charter for the price of a single cabin.

Each destination will have its own unique style and flavour. With Sunsail, you can cruise to 32 breathtaking destinations across the globe, and with the Moorings you can cruise to 27 worldwide destinations. These locations include all corners of the world, from our own backyard in the Whitsundays, to Tahiti, Tonga, New Zealand, Thailand, Malaysia, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and new Northern American destinations including San Francisco, Vancouver and Annapolis.

The Whitsundays are a group of 74 islands and islets in the shelter of the Great Barrier Reef, rated as one of the world’s most beautiful sailing grounds. In fact, Bareboating in the Whitsundays was voted as the Best Cruise or Yachting Experience in Australia at the Australian Traveller 2011 Reader’s Choice Awards.  Sunsail’s base on Hamilton Island, the only yacht charter company based on the island, is the ideal place to begin exploring the Whitsundays – the golden sandy beaches, unparalleled fringing reefs, tropical fish and frequent sightings of dolphins and humpback whales, are only a few of the marvels you are likely to experience here.

The possibilities offered by a Mediterranean sailing holiday are limitless. From the thousand Islands of Croatia’s Adriatic Coast, to the secluded anchorages of southern Turkey, the rich culture of Italy and the ancient history of Greece, you could find your ideal holiday in the Mediterranean. Highlights of your charter would include world-famous beaches, lively resorts, quiet fishing villages, secluded anchorages and tantalizing cuisine. Sailing itineraries in protected waters with short passages between stops, or itineraries with longer open-water crossings to remote islands and coastlines are both options, and you could even cruise one way from a number of the bases.

Asia Pacific

There’s a certain exotic charm to the Asia Pacific, whether you’re cruising the beautiful waters of Thailand and Malaysia, or the South Pacific gems of Tahiti and Tonga, or even around the amazing natural landscapes of New Zealand’s Bay of Islands. Get away from the hustle and bustle of busy life to swaying palms, coral lagoons, mountainous rain forests, shimmering turquoise seas and charming island villages. There’s no better way to explore them than by sailing!

New Destinations in North America

Launched this year, Sunsail opened 2 new bases in North America – in San Francisco (USA) and Vancouver Island (British Columbia, Canada). The Moorings also launched Annapolis, Maryland (USA). The destinations offer three distinctly different sailing opportunities:  San Francisco offers sailing by amazing landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge and right up to the Napa Valley region, Vancouver Island offers fabulous scenery and amazing wildlife, with more than 2,154 islands to explore, and Annapolis offers a treasure trove of historic points, famed waterfronts and quaint villages.

Sunsail Fleet

Sunsail have over 800 yachts across the globe, available for bareboat or skippered charter, as well as flotillas, sailing schools and regattas. The brand new Sunsail 444 is the cream of the crop however, having been awarded SAIL Magazine’s Best Boat 2012 in the Cruising Multihull under 50 feet category and also winning Import Boat of the Year and Best Cruising Multihull 2012 from Cruising World. Already in many of the Sunsail bases around the world, it will be joining the Hamilton Island fleet from November 2012.

The most significant modification on the Sunsail 444 is the addition of the open forward cockpit with direct access from the saloon, which offers increased visibility, ventilation, and living space. The 444 comes with air-conditioning and all the latest navigation technology and handles superbly – under sail, the 444 is unlike sailing any normal catamaran, with her deep narrow groove hulls and shallow draft, she is able to sail as close to the wind as many a monohull.

Moorings Fleet

The Moorings offers one of the youngest and most innovative fleets and are proud to offer the world’s largest catamaran fleet. In addition to bareboat sailing options, the Moorings also offer Luxury Private Crewed Charters. On-board, a full complement of equipment is included to ensure a great time for all, from snorkelling gear to fully equipped galleys, to easy-to-use navigational aids like large colour chart plotters.

The Moorings have also just launched the Moorings 5800, a Luxury Crewed catamaran which features an extraordinary 3-tiered design with five guest staterooms – all with private en-suite bathrooms as well as a spacious forward cockpit. Atop the large elevated fly-bridge, the island cruising enjoyment will be amplified by spectacular 360-degree views, stylish lounge seating and conveniences including a wet bar, refrigerator and extra BBQ grill. This yacht has a top-of-the-line entertainment system with a 46” flat-screen TV/DVD player, Apple TV, CD/stereo with MP3 connection and speakers throughout.
